Consumers unwilling to give up their luxury lifestyles in the recession are fuelling retail crime. Funded by an independent grant courtesy of Checkpoint Systems, the 2009 Global Retail Theft Barometer suggests that shoplifting has surged in the last 12 months, increasing by nearly 20% across the UK's High Streets and topping a staggering £4.88 billion for the first time.
